ABOUT 430 low and medium cost housing units in Chilanga and Nyimba Districts will be built within this year by the Zambia National Building Society (ZNBS), under the Chilanga and Nyimba Housing Projects.
ZNBS public relations and marketing officer, Chanda Mubanga, said the society was targeting to build 150 and 288 units in Nyimba and Chilanga, respectively.
The developers, Mr Chanda said, the society had already identified a developer for the project.
Mr Mubanga, in an interview, explained that the developer would work with local contractors and it would increase economic activities in the country.
He said the developer for the two sites had been identified through a procurement process that was conducted and has already been concluded.
“I know we have been talking about this for the past three years but we have made significant progress in this area; we should be having a ground breaking ceremony soon to kick off the construction of housing units in two areas,” he said.
Mr Mubanga said ZNBS would finance off-takers with mortgage while the developer would finance the project.
He said ZNBS had written to many local authorities to request for land for the project and so far only Nyimba and Chilanga had responded.
“You are aware that ZBNS embarked on a housing project that is going to have an approach of the public private partnership model which involves different stakeholders coming in to deliver an affordable house to a Zambian in a low to medium income bracket,” he said.
He said ZNBS was promoting industrialisation by putting up infrastructures which was an industrial activity.
