SOME internal auditors at the Ministry of General Education have been suspended for failing to prevent the misappropriation of K 19.5 million donor funds, says acting Minister of General Education Vincent Mwale.
Mr. Mwale said this was in addition to about 80 suspended erring officers who were allegedly involved in financial irregularities according to the forensic audit report.
He said this in Parliament yesterday, in response to a question for oral answer asked by Chinsali lawmaker, Kalalwe Mukosa who wanted to find out why more than 80 employees at the ministry were suspended.
In a follow up question Ikelengi MP Elijah Muchima asked what action was taken against internal auditors for not preventing the misappropriation of funds.
“Yes Mr Speaker I can confirm that some internal auditors have also been suspended as they did not do their job to prevent this act,” he said.
Kabompo MP, Ambrose Lufuma wondered whether it had to take donors to halt funding for Government to take action.
In response the minister said Government did not wait for donors as it had taken internal disciplinary action much earlier.
Mr. Mwale assured the House that Government was in talks with donors and that the funders would commence the normal funding once the interventions agreed on were finalised.
Kabwe Central MP Tutwa Ngulube asked if the Minster of General Education David Mabumba was contemplating to resign on moral grounds.
Mr. Mwale who is Local Government Minister said he could not respond to the question as he was not Mr. Mabumba.
He said suspended erring officers would remain suspended until disciplinary action was concluded.
