FARMERS at Kanyanje Gardeners Association in Ndola have accused Patriotic Front cadres of grabbing their land on the banks of the Kafubu River in Chipulukusu area.
In an interview yesterday, Ms Joyce Mwamba a member, said the farmers started gardening in the area in 1964 but cadres started grabbing the land in 2015.
Ms Mwamba charged that cadres destroyed the crops and started beating up the gardeners whenever they tried to defend ownership of their land.
She revealed that the farmers had on several occasions reported cases to the police, the Town Clerk Wisdom Bwalya and other relevant authorities, but nothing had been done.
The association consists of 89 members from Mapalo in Chipulukusu ward and Kanyanje ward from Pamodzi of Ndola Central and Chifubu constituency respectively.
Another farmer, Levy Mwamba, said it was sad that old people, who entirely depended on gardening for their sustenance, would be treated like refugees in their own country.
Mr Mwamba questioned why young people had no regard for the elderly adding that displacing them, destroying their crops and beating them up was inhuman.
Mr Noah Sakala also said it was sad that defenceless elderly people were being beaten by cadres over land they had been using since the 1960S. Mr Sakala said the farmers tried to engage the Chief who told them that he was not the right person to help, and further called on government to help them live normal lives like senior citizens.
