THE UPND’s autocratic and self-centred conduct by its leaders is alienating it from the people who are the ultimate owners of power in any democracy, UPND vice president for politics Canisius Banda has said.
Dr Banda said UPND’s self-centred conduct of its leaders would make the party’s pursuit of national governance a pipedream. Dr Banda said in a democracy, the power of many drives the agenda of a social collective while in an autocracy, the power of one leader or few leaders dictates the direction of that social collective. He said the opposition party was in trouble because it fell in the autocracy category and that it had become politically weak and consequently could not inspire citizens.
In an interview with the Daily Nation yesterday, Dr Banda said the UPND was autocratic while pretending to be a democracy.
He said the UPND Chilanga executive committees at both district and constituency levels resigning to join the PF was as a result of autocracy. The former UPND leader said this was inevitable because when members who were democrats encountered autocratic tendencies in a political party they rebelled.
Dr Banda said he expressed the observation in his resignation letter to the UPND president Hakainde Hichilema in September 2016.
