COUNCILLORS at the Kitwe City Council want the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Local government to release a circular for the date of election of Deputy Mayors and Deputy Council Chairpersons.
The councillors said this following the ruling of the Constitution Court that deputy Mayors and deputy council chairpersons were eligible to re-contest their positions.
Speaking after a meeting over the matter, Buntungwa ward councillor William Nyirenda said councillor felt that the date for the polls should now be set.
“According to the ruling of the constitution court, the deputy mayors and deputy council chairpersons are eligible to re-contest their positions, they should prove their popularity in the council through elections.
‘’This is why as councillors, we want the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Local government to release a circular for the date of elections so that elections can be held,’’ Mr Nyirenda said.
Mr Nyirenda said it was important that elections were held so that the acrimony which had characterised the councils over who should be the Deputy Mayor could be put to rest.
“We are sure that if the elections are held, the acrimony and scheming against each other will be put to rest and we will all concentrate on our civic duties,’’ he said.
Elections for Deputy Mayors and Deputy Council Chairpersons were supposed to be held in December last year, but it was delayed because some Deputy Mayors took the matter to the constitution court.
