THE Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS) has hailed local food processors for improving the quality of packaging of their products.
ZABS Executive Director Manuel Mutale said good quality packaging was essential not only for food safety but also for successful market and export competitiveness.
He said ZABS was so far impressed that food processors were investing in quality packaging materials.
Mr Mutale urged players in the sector to take a step further by applying for the mark of quality through product certification.
He said this during a visit to Seba Foods Limited as part of ZABS` ongoing industry engagement with various companies in the manufacturing sector.
“In the past we’ve seen products not being able to meet standard requirements where packaging is concerned and of course it is difficult for the buyers to accept products that are poorly packaged.
“As you may know poor packaging affects how a product is perceived and leads to a number of problems such as leakage of the product, breakage and sometimes contamination. However, we recognise the efforts of companies such as Seba Foods that have adhered to calls for improved quality,” Mr Mutale said.
Mr Mutale said ZABS was open to providing training and consultancy to food processors that may still be facing challenges with their packaging materials.
He implored Seba Foods and other food processing companies to utilise the ZABS packaging materials laboratory.
Mr Mutale said his organisation provides training and consultancy in food packaging and labelling and houses a packaging testing facility that was able to perform over 50 different tests on packaging materials including strength in boxes and bottles, seal strength and leakage of pouches.
