COOKED human hearts and livers have been recovered by police in Lusaka after the arrest of the mastermind in connection with the ritual killings in Matero Township, Parliament heard yesterday.
Home Affairs Minister Stephen Kampyongo disclosed that the human body parts were eaten by the suspect, who also shared with his unsuspecting neighbours who feasted unknowingly.
Mr Kampyongo also revealed that the suspect had also led the investigation team to the recovery of ears and private parts, which had been submitted to the forensic laboratory for examination.
He said investigations were still on-going and the suspect was scheduled to appear in court soon.
The Minister said this when he presented a Ministerial Statement on the recent ritual killings in Matero Constituency in Lusaka.
“The Zambia Police have instituted investigations, which have so far resulted in the arrest of one suspect. The suspect is assisting the police with the investigations. By February 24, 2018, police had with the help of the suspect recovered cooked human heart and liver,” Mr Kampyongo said.
He assured that the Zambia Police had since taken a number of measures to enhance security in Matero constituency and the country at large to curb the spate of suspected ritual murders.
“Among the measures, we have enhanced foot and motorised patrols, increased police presence in high density townships. Enhanced sensitisation of the general public on personal security and enforcement of the law on timely closure of drinking and entertainment places,” he said.
Mr Kampyongo also revealed that ritual killings were a result of false beliefs promoted by some traditional healers and herbalists, who claimed that use of human body parts in rituals could help one
And Rufunsa Member of Parliament Shear Mulyata called on Government to ban the advertisement of harmful and evil things that traditional healers claim they could do in newspapers, such as penis enlargement and wealth creation.
Ms Mulyata said such advertisements were contributing to the increase of ritual killings
“I am worried, why we should allow these traditional healers even to advertise in the newspapers, what they can do, they are doing very bad things like to create money, to enlarge some things and we are reading about these every day and it must be stopped,” she said.
