A LUSAKA woman has appeared in court for killing her husband after setting ablaze a house in which he was asleep.
Before the court was Mary Phiri, 46, of Chazanga compound, who is charged for murder contrary to Section 200 of the Penal Code Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.
Particulars of the offence are that on October 26, 2018, between 04:00 hours and 04:30 hours, Phiri murdered Solomon Zulu, 54.
Phiri’s case has since been allocated to Lusaka Magistrate Faides Hamaundu before whom she will be appearing for mention until her committal to the High Court for summary trial.
According to Zambia Police spokesperson Esther Katongo, the accused person set ablaze the house the couple was renting after locking the victim inside.
Ms. Katongo said the couple’s landlord Lazarus Mwila heard Mr. Zulu shouting for help and when he went outside, he noticed that the house, in which the victim was, was on fire as he tried to escape through a small window.
“He then called for help from other people in the neighbourhood who managed to rescue the victim and put out the fire. He suffered severe burns and was rushed to Chipata Level One Hospital.
“He was later referred to UTH where he died on 27th October 2018 at about 11:00 hours. The public apprehended the suspect, who had initially run away, and handed her over to the police,” Ms. Katongo said.
