ZAMBIA United Local Authorities Workers Union (ZULAWU) Secretary General Emmanuel Mwinsa has urged government to assist councils countrywide improve operations and welfare of workers this year.
Mr Mwinsa regretted that that last year council workers experienced delayed salaries and advised Government to have a different approach this year.
He was speaking in an interview in Ndola yesterday.
“A good number of council employees across the country faced hardships last year due to the inconsistent payment of salaries. We are therefore hoping that government puts in initiatives that will put an end to such situations,” he said.
Mr Mwinsa said that council employees needed good incentives to be motivated so that in turn operations of local authority could improve.
He noted that the situation last year was very dire for council employees who resorted to work stoppages and threats.
Mr Mwinsa said it would thus be important to ensure that challenges did not recur so that management in councils could plan well and improve service delivery.
The councils, he said, had a huge responsibility in implementing the decentralisation policy and other important programmes at local Government level.
Mr Mwinsa said ZULAWU would offer effective representation for workers and continued engaging Government on labour related matters.
