TRADERS at Kyawama market in Solwezi have called on the Road Development Agency (RDA) and Solwezi Municipal Council to quickly put up road signage at the Kyawama round about.
Market chairperson Kedson Kalota told the Daily Nation that the current state of the round-about was posing danger to motorists and other road users.
He said there was urgent need for both authorities to put up reflectors and other facilities on the traffic circle and along Independence Avenue to help motorists especially at night.
‘’We are concerned as marketeers here at Kyawama with this round-about.
There is no signage to show motorists coming from all the three directions namely airport, town and Mutanda directions. So, we are calling on the local authority and RDA to quickly look into this issue with the urgency it deserves,’’ he said.
Mr Kalota that if the facility was left unattended to, many lives would be lost through road fatalities.
He disclosed that recently, three people escaped death after the motor vehicle they were in rammed into one of the street lights on the round-about.
‘’This happened during the night so we need some good signage so that motorists are able to see from a distance that there is an object ahead of them,’’ he added.
When contacted for a comment, RDA regional manager Ndabani Manda advised motorists to observe speed limits.
Mr Manda said that all the accidents that had happened at Kyawama round-about were as a result of drunkenness and failure to observe the speed limit.
He however said that as soon the negotiations were done with the contractor working on the dual-carriageway, the road signage and reflectors would be addressed.
