A 34-YEAR-OLD man of Luanshya has been charged for allegedly defaming President Edgar Lungu during a phone-in programme on Millennium Radio.
Fred Maanya is charged with defamation of the President contrary to Section 96 of the Penal Code Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.
It is alleged that on March 28, 2019 in Lusaka with intent to bring the name of the president into ridicule published insulting matter by word of mouth.
The matter has been allocated to Chief Resident Magistrate Lameck Mwale.
The accused who is in custody could not take plea as he was not in court.
Maanya is expected to appear in court today for possible plea.
According to Zambia Police Public Relations Officer, Esther Katongo, the incident occurred on March 28, 2019 at 06:50 hours during a radio programme.
The suspect, Maanya of Zaoni Street in Luanshya is alleged to have called the radio station where he introduced himself as Chanda from Kabwe and later used derogatory remarks against the Head of State.
“Investigations revealed that the suspect was not Chanda but Fred Maanya of Luanshya and not Kabwe as he suggested,” she said.
