THE Kitwe Magistrates Court has sentenced a 22-year-old man of Chimwemwe township in Kitwe to five months imprisonment with hard labour for stealing a piglet.
Brain Mumba was charged with stocktheft contrary to the laws of Zambia.
Facts were that on April 25, 2017, in Kitwe, Mumba stole the pig valued at K750, the property of Mr Chitundu Musonda. Appearing before magistrate Chinunda Chiwaula, Mumba pleaded guilty.
Mumba told the court that he loved seeing the piglets at Musonda’s house and envied having them.
He told the court that after getting the piglet he planned to keep it.
“I did not have any permission to get the piglet from anyone, I just got it because I envied having one,” he said.
Magistrate Chinunda said upon the accused’s own admission, he found him guilty and convicted him accordingly.
In mitigation, Mumba begged the court for leniency, saying he had learnt a lesson.
Magistrate Chinunda said he had heard what Mumba said in mitigation and that he was a first offender who deserved the court’s leniency but he was sentencing him to five months imprisonment with hard labour.
He said if the accused was not happy with the sentence he had a right to appeal within 14 days.
