EMBATTLED politician Chishimba Kambwili’s troubles yesterday reached a crescendo when National Democratic Congress (NDC) Roan constituency officials rejected his nephew Joseph Chishala as candidate in next month’s parliamentary by-election.
The officials led by Women Constituency Secretary Mutale rejected Mr Chishala as candidate and vowed not to campaign for him.
Officials charged that Mr Kambwili had disregarded the adoption process and imposed his nephew on the party. Ms Mutale said leaders at various levels of the NDC were disappointed that the outspoken party consultant was exhibiting high levels of nepotism and dictatorial tendencies. She was accompanied by Women vice-Secretary Mwamba Musonda, Youth Trustee Michael Bwalya, vice-youth chairman Lameck Phiri, Youth Trustee Memory Daka and women trustee Mary Chomba Ms Mutale said Mr Kambwili had proved to be a selfish leader who had no desire to serve the interest of the people, but only wanted to use others for his personal gains. She was speaking in Kitwe yesterday.
“We have tried to give respect to Mr Kambwili, but he has continued to push us beyond limits. We have been stretched beyond limits and so we are also bound to react. The issue of adopting his nephew after his overture to adopt his son failed speaks volumes of Mr Kambwili.
“Any way, to cut the story short, we have rejected the candidature of his nephew and we will not campaign for him because Mr Kambwili wants to turn NDC into a family affair, which we cannot accept,” Ms Mutale said.
And some sources within NDC told the Daily Nation that apart from the issue of adopting his nephew, there were also issues of misapplication of funds which party members and some leaders were not happy with. The sources said the money from well-wishers meant for party activities was being abused by individuals using their positions much to the disappointment of the general membership.
“We didn’t know what kind of people we were supporting until now. You just hear that there are people who are selfish and greedy. We have seen people who are greedy, but pretend to be good people.
“We have situations where you see people collecting money for activities, but you find that people use the same money to go shopping.
“It is really sad. We have a lot of issues in the NDC,” said a source. On Thursday, NDC officials in Luanshya told the Daily Nation that Mr Kambwili had decided to adopt his nephew, a miner in Solwezi after his move to adopt his son failed because he had no voter’s card. He had earlier attempted to adopt his wife Carol, but they differed because she was against the idea and was not confident of winning the Roan seat.
