PATRIOTIC Front (PF) candidate, Maria Langa Phiri, took a narrow early lead in yesterday’s tightly contested Chilanga by-election.

Ms Phiri was leading her closest rival, UPND’s Charmaine Musonda, by just over 200 votes out of the 12 polling stations results announced by Press time.

According to confirmed results announced by returning officer, Wlbroad Bwalya, Ms Phiri had a total of 2,551, followed by Ms Musonda with 2,316, while United Prosperous and Peaceful Zambia (UPPZ) and National Restoration Party (NAREP) candidates had 77 and 50 respectively.

UPPZ fielded Francis Kope and NAREP’s Charlie Mazabuka also contested the seat  that fell vacant following the conviction and sentencing of Keith Mukata for murdering a guard, Namakambwa Kali

lakwenda, at his law firm.

Mr Mukata was arrested and tried with Ms Musonda, his former lover, who was later acquitted. The adoption of Ms Musonda was not well received by Chilanga residents including most UPND members. Two councillors quit the party after refusing to campaign for her on moral grounds.

PF cadres in the area were spotted celebrating while senior officials joined their UPND counterparts in witnessing the totaling of ballots and announcements.

There are 25 polling stations in Chilanga Constituency and these are the consolidated results.

The PF also won Musonda and Nyemba wards in Luapula.
