THE Zambia Police have instituted investigations into the case in which a security guard was mistakenly shot dead by police officers while another was seriously wounded at Marydale farm at the weekend.
Police spokesperson Esther Katongo told Daily Nation yesterday, that investigations had been launched to establish what transpired.
Ms Katongo said the officers, from Westhood police station, were informed that four armed robbers had invaded the farm belonging to Sobi industries.
She said the officers rushed to the scene where they mistakenly shot the guards after suspecting them to be some of the robbers.
Ms Katongo said the two security guards were spotted by the officers as they tried to run away. “Westwood police received a report through phone that four criminals, two armed with guns had entered Sobi Farm premises. Officers rushed to the same farm and upon reaching, they were joined by one guard and entered the farm in search of the criminals.
“While doing that in the dark they spotted two people who tried to run away upon seeing the officers causing the officers open fire killing one on the spot and wounded another.
But it was later discovered that they were also guards at the same farm,” she said. Ms Katongo said the body of the deceased was lying in the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) while the wounded guard was admitted to the same hospital.
