Solwezi Municipal Council has reaffirmed its commitment towards improving waste management.
In a statement yesterday, Council Public Relations Officer Moses Ngosa said to effectively manage the waste, the local authority had divided the district into four zones and awarded the contracts to private waste management companies.
The district, he said, had experienced an increase in population and economic activities in the recent past and effective management of solid waste was key.
He explained the move was meant to promote Public Private Partnership as well as improve on waste collection efficiency.
“And the four zones are Mushitala which is being managed by Transco, Mitec zone is under Waste Maid, Urban South under Lembi Investment, while the Urban North is being managed by the council itself.
“These contracts have been awarded following the expiry of the 10-year-contract with Wana Cleaning company,’’ he said.
He revealed that the local authority had received complaints from the general public concerning the newly engaged companies, which prompted management to call for a meeting with the three companies.
He said the three companies had promised to improve their services to meet the people’s expectations.
“And arising from the same meeting, as a local authority, we want to assure the general public that all their concerns will be addressed without fail,’’ he said.
