Three miners have died at Mopani’s Mindola mine Shaft in Kitwe while one is battling for his life in Wusakile Mine hospital after an accident.
The three suffocated while working underground after a loader caught fire.
Mopani Copper Mines Public Relations Manager Nerbert Mulenga said the incident happened at 13.45 hours adding that operations at the mines have since been suspended.
‘’It is with deep regret that Mopani Copper Mines Plc confirms an incident of a fatal underground fire at Mindola North Shaft in Kitwe on Thursday, February 7, 2019 at 13.45 hours.
“Tragically, the lives of three employees were lost after a loader caught fire,’’ Mr Mulenga.
The three victims who are all youths have been identified as Ray Mungo of Ndeke Township, Tom Kamanga and Bartholomew Mwamba both of Wusakile Township.
Mr Mulenga said the mine was closely working with the Mine Safety Department and other Government wings to investigate the tragic accident.
Mr Mulenga also said the management would render the necessary support to the bereaved families.
