PLANS are underway to construct a Trauma centre on Great East Road in Lusaka because it is hot spot for road traffic accidents, says Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary Kennedy Malama.
Dr Malama said once the trauma centre was constructed and equipped, health workers would be posted to manage the centre including specialised medical doctors.
Dr Malama said potential trauma centres would also be constructed in Nyimba, Chibombo and Kabwe.
Dr Malama noted that accidents that occurred along Great East Road especially in Rufunsa district involved mass casualties.
Dr Malama said this when he commissioned a lecture theatre hall at St Luke’s College of Nursing and Midwifery at Mpanshya Hospital in Rufunsa district.
And Dr Malama said the 14-star housing units built by SolidarMed at a cost of US$700, 000, would significantly mitigate the shortage of accommodation for staff and the institution.
St Luke’s acting principal Tutor Sister Valeria Kabaso said the lecture theatre hall would increase sitting space and thanked the Government and cooperating partners for continued support at the institution.
Meanwhile, SolidarMed country director Danny Harvey said following a success of the pilot phase at St .Luke, the lecturer theatre hall would improve the practical skills and knowledge of the nurse graduates.
