SOME unscrupulous people have been puncturing Kafubu Water and Sewerage Company (KWSC) pipes in Mitengo near the Ndola-Mufulira road and tapping the water for building purposes on the adjacent Dola Hill plots.
The water has been spilling for the past one week and the builders get to the punctured pipes early in the morning to avoid being spotted.
A check showed that the water was still spilling and collecting in potholes on the rugged Ndola-Mufulira road near the Zambia Forestry and Forest Industries Corporation (ZAFFICO) turn off.
Residents in Mitengo have complained that some bricklayers had been vandalising pipes on a number of occasions even after repairs near ZAFFICO turn off.
KWSC public relations officer Fales Mwanza could not be reached for a comment as she was out of the office while her phone went unanswered.
Shula Bwalya, a resident in Mitengo, said water was being wasted and suggested that KWSC should install the pipes deep enough so that vandals could not uproot them. She wondered whether the bricklayers had the blessings of their employers to damage pipes that were installed at great cost. Some residents said they found a group of bricklayers and their helpers on Sunday around 05.00 hours drawing water in drums and crossing the road to Dola Hill plots. Others who were going to Church also spotted some men with empty drums trying to cross the road, but when alarm was raised they retreated to the bushy Dola Hill area. They said some of them crossed into Mitengo in the night to fetch water from the leaking pipes and appealed to KWSC to find ways of safeguarding installations. Pools of water have formed in the potholes on Ndola-Mufulira road, further damaging the already rugged stretch which has been earmarked for rehabilitation.
