…as Kitwe United go down fighting
By MICHAEL MIYOBA
ZANACO FC has maintained its unbeaten record in the 2019 MTN/FAZ transitional Super League after overcoming Kitwe United 4-3 in yesterday’s seven goal thriller at Sunset Stadium in Lusaka.
A brace from striker Rodger Kola and a goal apiece from former Power Dynamos winger Julius Situmbeko plus an own goal from Kyawa Kapota guaranteed Zanaco’s triumph in front of their home fans.
Numba Mumamba’s boys created the first scoring opportunity as early as the fourth minute when Kola put Zanaco in the lead after beating the Kitwe United goal keeper Lameck Siame after benefiting from Chitiya Mususu’s cross.
Zanaco’s running power in attack nearly brought them a second goal in the sixth minute but were unfortunate when Situmbeko found speedy winger Ernest Mbewe whose sublime shot on target was saved by the goal keeper.
Kitwe United however levelled matters through Rodgers Mukenge who took advantage of Zanaco’s clumsy defence before putting the ball behind the back of the net.
Zanaco looked dangerous with their fluid build-up play, and took advantage of Kitwe United’s loose marking which resulted in the visitors scoring an own goal by Kapota who unintentionaly put Zanaco in the lead with a headed own goal.
Zanaco stretched its lead to 3-1 when Situmbeko found the back of the net after benefitting from Ernest Mbewe’s pass inside the eighteen yard.
Kitwe United responded to going behind by putting together some sustained spells of pressure, which resulted in striker Moses Lolozi reducing the score line to 3-2 after beating Zanaco’s Toaster Nsabata in the 39th minute.
However, the ‘bankers’ reclaimed their two goal lead in the last minute of the first half as Kola completes his brace with a sublime shot from inside the eighteen yard box as Zanaco enjoyed a comfortable 4-2 lead before half time.
The second half produced less intriguing action for Zanaco as Kitwe United dominated play when the unmarked Rodgers Mukenge gave Kitwe United some hope when he completed his brace with a low shot inside the eighteen yard in the 67th minute.
Mukenge’s goal proved to be the final major attacking highlight of the match for the visitors who suffered their second defeat following their 1-0 defeat to Nakambala Leopards before recording a barren draw with Kabwe Warriors in a week two fixture played at Garden Park in Kitwe.
Meanwhile the win over Kitwe United exposed Zanaco’s weak defense which has allowed six goals in three games but escalated the team to the summit of the log in stream-A with 9-points. Zanaco’s next fixture will be against Zesco United in a week four fixture at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium while Kitwe United will host Mighty Mufulira Wanderers in their next fixture.
