ILLEGAL Zimbabwean taxi drivers that have invaded the border town of Chirundu are being used as conduits for smuggling of goods into the country, a Chirundu businessman Kawana Mwangala has said.
Mr. Mwangala said the Department of Immigration must act on the issue and expel the foreigners that were engaging in smuggling of goods at the one stop border post because the country was losing revenue through such illegal acts.
He said the high number of Zimbabweans that had settled in Chirundu was becoming a security risk to the country considering that many of them were staying in the country illegally.
Mr. Mwangala appealed to the Immigration Department and other security wings to urgently address the matter before it got out of control.
“The high numbers of tax drivers from Zimbabwe who are trading on the Zambian side and the number of Zimbabweans who have settled in Zambian without proper documentations is becoming a security risk to the country so there is need for the authorities to deal with this issue,” said Mwangala
Meanwhile, Mr. Mwangala has accused Chirundu UPND Member of Parliament Douglas Syakalima of failing to develop the area.
Mr Mwangala said the three years that Mr Syakalima had served as MP, Chirundu had lagged behind in terms development especially in rural areas.
He said from the time Mr. Syakalima was elected, he had not initiated any development in the border district.
Mr. Mwangala challenged the MP to point at any single project he had implemented in his constituency from the time he was voted into office.
He said the people of Chirundu were facing serious challenges such aswater and poor roads that needed urgent solutions.
